Survey Shows Internal Mobile Application Test Beds Are Not Cost Effective

February 7, 2006

SAN MATEO, CA – February 7, 2006 – Mobile Complete, the leading industry source for user experience management (UEM), today released survey results indicating creating and maintaining an internal mobile application test bed is not the most efficient use of resources. The survey was conducted among 100 mobile application developers, content providers, aggregators, and porting companies, which found the average annual cost of an internally managed 100 handset test bed is over $75,000. Outsourced solutions can now deliver up to 200% annual cost savings.

All surveyed companies need to maintain an internal test bed and face the same challenges, including large quarterly expenditures to procure the latest handsets, provisioning data plans; keeping track of lost, broken and replacement SIMS; duplicate device requirements, and insufficient number of available devices during final QA.

“Handsets account for over 50% of annual internal test bed costs,” said Mobile Complete CEO Faraz Syed. “Most mobile network carriers require that developers support a comprehensive library of up-to-date devices to maintain their certification status and remain on the operators application decks.”

Other survey findings reveal internally managed handsets are idle and unused for large periods of time. Their access is most often limited to a few individuals in the organization. Since many surveyed companies are increasingly using less expensive, off-site resources, additional or duplicate handsets must be purchased and provisioned to support remote development staff. In addition, many respondents report due to very short development cycles, acquiring the latest handsets, physically sending them to the network carrier for provisioning and waiting for their return creates a bottleneck in their development and release schedules. Most respondents wait 4 -7 days to procure handsets.

The study also found that all surveyed companies use live, in-network handsets for their Alpha/Beta programs, final QA and troubleshooting. The vast majority of respondents welcome alternative methods to bolster their existing processes to shorten development cycles and ensure the quality of their applications.
